The heads of New Zealand’s Asian diplomatic posts met in New Zealand at the beginning of May 2008 to discuss keeping New Zealand ahead of the curve in Asia. The 14 Ambassadors, High Commissioners and Consuls-General, discussed a range of issues including security, trade and economic prospects for the region, and ways to position New Zealand for maximum advantage.
Compiled by Statistics New Zealand for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, this is updated every six months. It lists, by country, the top 20 merchandise imports and exports, as well as trade in services. The "Grey Book", as it is known, is available from the Statistics New Zealand website as a PDF file (567KB) [external link].

The Ministry of Tourism releases up-to-date tourism figures and analysis each month. These figures are available from the Ministry of Tourism website [external link] and include historical comparisons. Other datasets are also available.
New Zealand is currently negotiating a Free Trade Agreement with China. Negotiations for a Closer Economic Partnership with Hong Kong are currently on hold but interest in an agreement remains strong.

The economies of North Asia are becoming increasingly linked to New Zealand’s economic growth and prosperity. As these large economies develop, new opportunities in a variety of sectors are opening for New Zealand businesses. A range of cooperative activities between New Zealand and the Republic of Korea (ROK) were outlined in the Partnership for the 21st Century adopted by President Roh Moo-hyun and Prime Minister Helen Clark, during President Roh's visit to New Zealand from 7-10 December. While acknowledging its current healthy state and strong progress in recent times, the two leaders recognised the importance of actively building the bilateral relationship. The Partnership for the 21st Century provides a roadmap for carrying forward the dynamic relationship enjoyed by the ROK and New Zealand.
