The New Zealand Consulate-General in Brisbane opens for business today (Monday 21 July 2008) to further boost New Zealand’s diplomatic representation in Australia.
This is the second new overseas post to be opened this year as part of the five year capability funding increase for the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade announced in this year’s budget.
The opening of the Brisbane Consulate-General means New Zealand now has three diplomatic posts in Australia; the High Commission in Canberra, and Consulate-Generals in Sydney and Brisbane.
New Zealand’s Consul-General in Brisbane is career diplomat Nick Hurley. The Consul-General will initially operate from temporary premises.
For Consulate-General contact details see below:
The post will be the first point of contact for New Zealanders seeking consular assistance in Queensland. See www.safetravel.govt.nz for further details.
The Consulate-General will not issue passports or emergency travel documents. In Australia, all passport applications are processed by the New Zealand Passport Office (Department of Internal Affairs) in Sydney.
New Zealand will soon also have diplomatic representation at the Consulate-General in Melbourne, currently run by New Zealand Trade and Enterprise. See below for the announcement about New Zealand’s new Consul-General for Melbourne.
