Sixty years ago the General Assembly of the United Nations adopted the first major international human rights instrument: the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
The Declaration sets out a broad range of fundamental human rights and freedoms to which all people are entitled. While there has been steady progress on human rights standards in the 60 years since the Declaration was adopted, challenges remain.
To celebrate the 60th anniversary, and to contribute to debate and awareness of the Declaration and its core values in New Zealand, an essay competition is being held for Year 12 and 13 students.
Students entering the competition are encouraged to write up to one thousand words around the theme: the relevance of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights today.
The closing date for entries to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade is Tuesday 12 August 2008.
The winner will get the opportunity to read extracts from his or her essay at an event in Wellington celebrating the 60th anniversary of the Declaration. The winner’s school will also receive a credit for library books to the value of $1000.
