New Zealand and New Caledonia have strengthened cultural and sporting awareness over the last year thanks to a programme that showcased a range of dance, art and sporting events.
The programme, known as the New Caledonia-New Zealand Season 2007, saw more than fifty cultural and sporting events take place in seventeen New Zealand centres from Whangarei to Wanaka. More than 200 New Caledonians took part, reaching audiences nationwide.
The New Zealand Consul General in Noumea participated in the steering committee for the Season, and Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade staff in both Noumea and Wellington helped to organise programmes for New Caledonian officials visiting New Zealand to support the events.
The diverse programme of Season events included modern and traditional dance, pétanque, kaneka music, art exhibitions, culinary exchanges, and rally racing. New Caledonian author, Nicolas Kurtovich, also took up the Randell Cottage literary residency in Wellington for six months.
New Caledonia's participation in the 2007 New Zealand Youth Parliament was also tied into the wider Season programme.
The New Caledonia-New Zealand Season 2007 was officially closed on 22 May in Noumea by the President of the New Caledonia Government, Harold Martin.
A number of reciprocal events are underway or planned, including presentation of the “War in Paradise” exhibition which documents the experience of New Zealand soldiers in New Caledonia during World War II. New Zealand dance group Atamira Dance Collective, which worked with New Caledonian choreographer Richard Digoue during the Season, will visit New Caledonia later in 2008 for performances in Noumea.
