MFAT releases 2008-11 Statement of Intent and background Budget 08 information

Overview

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade has today released its Statement of Intent - 2008 (PDF 408KB), which outlines plans for a progressive upgrading of its capability to advance and protect New Zealand’s interests in an ever more crowded, complex and competitive globalised world. This has been made possible by the Government’s approval of additional operating and capital funds from 2008/09. These additional resources will enable the Ministry to have greater impact and deliver results in seven areas which are pivotal to the Government’s security and prosperity priorities:

These additional resources will enable the Ministry to have greater impact and deliver results in seven areas which are pivotal to the Government’s security and prosperity priorities:

addressing ongoing vulnerabilities in the Pacific
anchoring New Zealand in evolving Asia-Pacific regional security and political arrangements
securing increased market access for New Zealand
transforming the economy through use of international linkages
negotiating international rules around climate change and resource management
strengthening New Zealand contributions to international peace and security
upgrading capability to deal with consular crises and emergencies.
