(We don't have information papers on all countries and territories.)
Although we have tried to use plain English content on the site, you may come across specialist terms and acronyms. Find out what they mean in our glossary of terms.

Registering travel details on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade's safetravel website www.safetravel.govt.nz can help us account for New Zealanders in the event of a disaster overseas, such as a cyclone or an earthquake. Safetravel also provides travel advisories by region and country, and access to advice and contact details for use in emergencies - see the Before you go section of the website for more information.
New Zealanders visiting or residing overseas are
encouraged to register their details on safetravel.
There is a simplified process for people travelling
as part of a tour group. The information assists
us in knowing how many New Zealanders may be in
an affected area in the event of an emergency such
as a natural disaster and helps us to make contact
with them.
For example, New Zealanders who were in Myanmar
at the time of Cyclone Nargis and in China's Sichuan
and Chongqing provinces at the time of the large
earthquake, and who had registered their travel
contact details on the safe travel website were
often accounted for first.
Where travel details are not registered, the Ministry works with its Embassies and High Commissions and contacts on the ground to try to locate New Zealanders who may be unaccounted for. This can take time, especially where limited information is available about a person's travel plans and exact location, in what can be difficult conditions with limited communication avenues. Leaving a detailed travel itinerary and contact details with family and or friends can also make a difference.
