The Ross Sea and Southern Ocean Review 2002

In May 2002, Cabinet agreed the framework for New Zealand’s participation in the Convention on the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR) should involve:

promoting a range of management tools, such as marine protected areas or no-take areas, to conserve biodiversity;
supporting currently planned New Zealand research in relation to ecosystems and biodiversity in the Ross Sea marine environment;
maintaining consideration of the effects of all activities on the Antarctic marine environment under existing legislation;
supporting development of a species specific and/or area-specific precautionary based fisheries framework for the Ross Sea, which identifies research needs and ensures that any fishery is ecologically sustainable.

Cabinet also agreed that New Zealand should continue to participate in sustainable fishing activities at conservative and precautionary catch levels approved by CCAMLR and consistent with its principles of conservation and Scientific Committee advice, while protecting biodiversity
