As a member of the Convention on the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR), New Zealand has a responsibility to deter illegal fishing in the CCAMLR area, and to monitor licensed vessels’ compliance with CCAMLR Conservation Measures.
New Zealand designates Inspectors under the CCAMLR System of Inspection and carries out extensive patrolling of the Southern Ocean and Ross Sea each season using long-range maritime patrol aircraft (P3K Orions) of the Royal New Zealand Air Force.
