Public Statements from meetings of the Public Advisory Committee on Disarmament and Arms Control (PACDAC)

November 2008

The Public Advisory Committee on Disarmament and Arms Control (PACDAC) met on 11 November 2008 to consider applications to the Peace and Disarmament Education Trust (PADET).  A total of $47,670 was granted to support postgraduate study on disarmament topics and to enable work on peace and disarmament initiatives.

The Committee also discussed a range of policy issues.

The next deadline for applications to the Peace and Disarmament Education Trust (PADET), and the Disarmament Education United Nations Implementation Fund (DEUNIF) is 31 May 2009. 

The committee is next scheduled to meet in April 2009..

 

July 2008

The Public Advisory Committee on Disarmament and Arms Control (PACDAC) met on 9 July 2008 to consider applications to the Peace and Disarmament Education Trust (PADET) and the Disarmament Education and United Nations  Implementation Fund (DEUNIF).  A total of $170,158.34 was granted to enable various work to be carried out with disarmament education and associated peace initiatives.

The committee also discussed a range of policy issues.  PACDAC welcomed the significant advances in disarmament law with the adoption of the Convention on Cluster Munitions on 30 May 2008 in Dublin, Ireland.  PACDAC commended New Zealand for its leadership role in the Oslo process that created the treaty. 

PACDAC welcomes New Zealand’s engagement in the May 2008 Second Preparatory Committee for the 2010 Nuclear Non-Proliferation Review Conference, including its co-ordination of the New Agenda Coalition.

PACDAC has identified two areas of research it is particularly interested in receiving PADET or scholarship applications for.  These are:

The next deadline for applications is 30 September 2008.  The committee will meet on 12 November 2008 to consider PADET and scholarship applications.
