New Zealand intervention
Mr Chairman
New Zealand would like to join other delegations in expressing concern about reports of possible non-declared activities in Syria, and we would like to thank the Director General for his oral report on the issue.
New Zealand recognises that each NPT state has an obligation to report the planning and construction of any nuclear facility to the IAEA as part of their safeguards obligations. Such information is essential for the IAEA to carry out its verification mandate.
The ongoing dialogue between the IAEA and Syria on this issue since September last year is welcome. We encourage the Agency to continue with its efforts and to carry out a thorough investigation of possible non-declared activities in Syria. We welcome Syria’s invitation to IAEA inspectors and call on Syria to co-operate fully with the Agency by providing information and access to inspectors to allow the Agency to carry out its verification mandate.
Thank you Mr Chairman
