IAEA Board of Governors: 7-11 June 2010

Agenda item 7: Israeli nuclear capabilities - New Zealand statement

Thank you Mr Chairman.

New Zealand wishes to express its disappointment that this item has been included on the agenda for this meeting. Like other IAEA Member States we have received the Director General’s letter inviting comments related to the Israeli Nuclear Capabilities resolution adopted by vote at last year’s General Conference. New Zealand voted against that divisive resolution and is still considering a response to the Director General’s letter.

We consider that it is premature to pursue a discussion of this issue here. Its inclusion in the agenda is particularly regrettable given the consensus outcome achieved on Middle East issues at last month’s NPT Review Conference. New Zealand fully supports the outcome of that Conference and considers it to be the appropriate mechanism through which to move this issue forward.

Thank you Mr Chairman.
