New Zealand monitors human rights developments in countries around the world. Where appropriate, we make our views known to the authorities concerned, on a bilateral or multilateral basis. Increasingly, we are also assisting bilaterally and regionally with human rights capacity building, usually through NZAID. Assistance can be provided within the ambit of NZAID's bilateral country programmes, or through regional programmes such as the Pacific Programme for Strengthening Governance. Examples of assistance include studies undertaken in the Pacific by NZ Human Rights Commission, in conjunction with the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat, and the NZ Law Commission; and support for the Asia Pacific Forum of National Human Rights Institutions.
