New Zealand welcomes the delegation of Viet Nam to the Council. We value this opportunity to engage with Viet Nam, in addition to dialogue we enjoy through our bilateral exchanges.
New Zealand recognises the significant achievements of Viet Nam, for example, in reducing poverty and enhancing economic prosperity. Viet Nam has in recent years adopted many laws and regulations related to the protection of human rights. However, effective implementation remains a barrier to achievement of Viet Nam’s constitutional commitments and its international legal obligations.
New Zealand remains concerned about controls on internet access, restrictions on political gatherings, control and monitoring of NGOs, and suppression of most forms of criticism of government policies. Continuing restrictions on freedom of expression and media rights impedes the government’s efforts to improve institutional governance and its ability to give full effect to its international human rights treaty obligations, including those under the ICCPR.
New Zealand is concerned about ongoing discrimination against women through lack of effective redress against sexual harassment, low levels of representation of women in senior government roles, and traditional societal attitudes that essentially relegate women to subordinate roles in the labour market.
