Ongoing terrorist planning and attacks around the world reinforce the importance of effective counter-terrorism measures. New Zealand continues actively to support regional and international counter-terrorism efforts, and to work closely with regional partners on initiatives aimed at improving counter-terrorism capability, especially in the Pacific and Southeast Asia.
New Zealand’s Counter-Terrorism Initiatives
New Zealand is committed to regional and international counter-terrorism cooperation, and to improving its counter-terrorism capability, consistent with the rule of law and fundamental human rights.
New Zealand has implemented counter-terrorism measures required by the United Nations Security Council and other international bodies, both through legislation and by strengthening border controls and intelligence capabilities;
New Zealand contributes militarily to International Security Assistance Force efforts to counter terrorism in Afghanistan, and to the Maritime Interdiction Operations in the Persian Gulf and Arabian Sea;
New Zealand works actively with Pacific Island countries to strengthen the region’s capacity to meet international counter-terrorism benchmarks. New Zealand has provided assistance to Pacific Island countries with legislative drafting and reporting on Security Council counter-terrorism requirements, as well as supporting the development of greater operational capabilities in their security sectors;
New Zealand works with ASEAN countries to help build regional counter-terrorism capacity, working with the region’s three counter-terrorism training centres;
The Asia Security Fund provides support to counter-terrorism initiatives in Southeast Asia.
