Threats to international peace and security have risen in recent years. These threats include proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, terrorism (especially that motivated by extremist ideologies), state failure or fragility, and conflict and post conflict situations. Threats are often transboundary in nature.
New Zealand takes a comprehensive and long-term approach to address these security threats. New Zealand participates in the international campaign against terrorism, peace support operations, and conflict resolution, and works with other governments and in regional and international bodies to promote wider security cooperation and stability.
Responsibility for security policy in the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade rests with the International Security and Disarmament Division (ISED).
