VIPs network at opening of new Brussels chancery

The new chancery of the New Zealand Embassy in Brussels was officially opened on 21 April 2010 by Ambassador Peter Kennedy, on behalf of Foreign Affairs Minister Murray McCully. Mr McCully had been forced to abandon his trip to Brussels and Estonia after disruptions to air travel caused by volcanic ash from Iceland.

Guests at the opening ceremony numbered over 100. They included the Secretary General of the World Customs Organisation, the Vice Presidents of Pernod Ricard and Zeebrugge Port Authority, the regional managing directors of Fonterra, Meat and Wool NZ and Zespri, and senior representatives of the EU Council, European Commission and the Belgian Foreign Minister’s office.

In his address, Peter Kennedy took the opportunity to refer to the EU-NZ comprehensive agreement under discussion, and also to the joint Australia-NZ bid to host the Square Kilometre Array radio telescope project. He also noted that it was the 50th anniversary of New Zealand’s formal diplomatic relations with the EU (which began with the EEC in 1960).
