Latin America Strategy - Objective and Criteria as of June 2009

The objective of the Government's Latin America Strategy is to expand and deepen NewZealand's links with Latin America, especially to maximize the economic opportunities for New Zealand in the region and to strengthen political and foreign policy engagement.  The associated Latin America Strategy Fund is a New Zealand Inc tool to help achieve this objective.The fund consists of $250,000 per year and is administered by the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade.

Proposals for funding under the Latin America Strategy Fund (LASF) are considered against the broad criteria that the project: 

• fits with the objectives of the Latin America Strategy;
• is consistent with the NZ Embassy and Americas Division operational plans;
• is supported by relevant New Zealand government agencies;
• will make a positive contribution to relations with the host country/region;
• is not able to secure funding from a more appropriate alternative source;
• is self-sustaining (i.e. does not require on-going funding from LASF);
• reflects the varying intensities of New Zealand's relations with the region, with particular priority to Brazil, Chile and Mexico, as well as Argentina, Peru, Uruguay, while open to opportunities with other regional partners like Cuba and Colombia.
