Minister Carter’s visit to Argentina featured engagement with political and business leaders, focusing on the agriculture, forestry, investment and trade sectors.

At the World Forestry Congress in Buenos Aires, Minister Carter delivered the keynote address [Beehive website], in which he stated that while forestry faced significant challenges, such as illegal logging and population growth, it also offered many environmental and economic solutions – such as replacing fossil-based energy with biomass-based energy products and using timber in new and innovative ways in buildings.

While in Argentina, Minister Carter met Minister of Livestock, Agriculture and Fish Julián Domínguez to discuss bilateral linkages in agriculture. At the end of the meeting, Ministers Carter and Dominguez released a joint statement [external link - beehive.govt.nz - PDF 24KB]on agricultural cooperation.

In Brazil, Minister Carter met Agriculture Minister Reinhold Stephanes, other agriculture politicians, the National Confederation of Agriculture (equivalent to Federated Farmers), and major beef and dairy players. In São Paulo, Minister Carter delivered a speech to around fifty representatives of industry organisations on New Zealand’s agricultural policy and building partnerships with Brazil, including in the context of WTO and climate change negotiations.  In it, he promoted the merits of farming without subsidies.

In Bahia, in north-eastern Brazil, Minister Carter opened New Zealand-owned Leite Verde’s new milk processing factory. The event was also attended by the Governor of Bahia, Jacques Wagner

In Uruguay, Minister Carter met with Vice-Minister of Agriculture and Forestry, Daniel Garín, Minister of Economy and Finance, Alvaro García and Minister of Housing, Planning and Environment, Carlos Colacce, as well as senior investment promotion and agricultural science officials.

These meetings underlined the strong economic linkages between Uruguay and New Zealand, including in the area of agricultural investment. Minister Carter delivered a speech to the Florida Dairy Producers’ Society about the global outlook for dairying, and New Zealand investment in the Uruguayan dairy sector.

In all three countries, Minister Carter promoted the New Zealand Global Alliance initiative [Beehive website] which seeks to promote cooperation around research into how to cut greenhouse gas emissions from agriculture.
