
Hon Tim Groser, New Zealand’s Minister of Trade and Minister Responsible for International Climate Change Negotiations, visited Uruguay on 18-22 April to participate in the 35th meeting of the Cairns Group of agricultural exporting countries and undertake a bilateral programme of trade, investment and climate change-related meetings.
Mr Groser held meetings in Uruguay's capital, Montevideo, on 21 April with President José Mujica, Foreign Minister Luis Almagro, Agriculture Minister Tabaré Aguerre and Climate Change Minister Graciela Muslera.
A press statement [PDF, 11kb], outlining the very positive relationship between New Zealand and Uruguay and plans for future cooperation, was released by the Uruguayan Government on 21 April at the conclusion of the talks.
The release underlines the importance of bilateral links in the areas of agricultural trade and development, public sector reform, and research into agricultural greenhouse gas emissions through the Global Research Alliance.
Mr Groser delivered invitations to President Mujica and to Agriculture Minister Aguerre to visit New Zealand. He also met with a range of contacts in the business, research and agricultural spheres, including New Zealand Farming Systems Uruguay, New Zealand's leading investment in Uruguay.
