South Pacific Regional Fisheries Management Organisation Negotiations (SPRFMO)

New Zealand is to host the 8th, possibly final, round of negotiations to establish a regional fisheries management organisation (RFMO) to manage the South Pacific’s non-tuna like species. The SPRFMO will fill a current management gap in international fisheries. New Zealander Bill Mansfield is the independent Chair.

 

APEC Annual Economic Leaders’ Week

Venue: Singapore
Dates: 8-15 November

This is the 20th annual APEC Leaders’ Week. Events include the Ministerial Meeting, Finance Ministerial Meeting, 2009 CEO Summit and Economic Leaders Meeting. This year’s meeting themes include: addressing the economic crisis and preparing the region for recovery, supporting the multi-lateral trading system, accelerating regional economic integration and strengthening APEC.

 

Trans-Pacific Symposium on Dismantling Transnational Illicit Networks

Venue: Honolulu, Hawaii

The Symposium goal is to strengthen inter-regional law enforcement networks to combat transnational threats. Between 100-200 officials from the Pacific Rim will attend.

 

Brazil Business Forums

These half-day forums will focus on business opportunities in Brazil, and are organised by the Latin America-New Zealand Business Council, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade and New Zealand Trade and Enterprise. Keynote speakers include Mario Marconini (Federation of Industries Organisations in Sao Paulo), Alexandre Pundek (Brazil Central Bank, Hamish Wiig (Tait Communication), and John Allen (MFAT).

 

Commonwealth Foreign Ministers’ Meeting

Commonwealth Foreign Ministers meet before the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM). Foreign Ministers will also engage with Commonwealth civil society organisations.

 

Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group (CMAG)

The Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group (CMAG) was established by Commonwealth Heads of Government in November 1995 to deal with serious or persistent violations of the Harare Declaration, which lays down the Commonwealth's fundamental political values. The Group is convened by the Commonwealth Secretary-General and made up of Foreign Ministers from nine countries. It currently includes the Foreign Ministers of Ghana, Malaysia, Namibia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Sri Lanka, St Lucia, Uganda and United Kingdom.

 

Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM)

Commonwealth Heads of Government meet to decide Commonwealth policies, initiatives and activities for the next two years, and provide a unique forum for consultation at the highest level of government.

 

6th Regular Session of the Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission

Venue: Papeete, Tahiti
Dates: 7 – 11 December

The WCPFC manages the highly migratory tuna stocks of the Western and Central Pacific region. The Commission is responsible for the long-term conservation and sustainable use of highly migratory fish stocks in the Western and Central Pacific Ocean. It has a particular focus on the tuna fishery, currently estimated to be worth well over US$3 billion a year and of critical economic importance to Pacific Island Countries.
