New Zealand-Australian Whale Research Voyage in the Southern Ocean

A joint expedition aboard the NIWA vessel Tangaroa to conduct whale research in the Ross Sea and Southern Ocean. This will be the first major voyage of the newly formed Southern Ocean Research Partnership (SORP), a collaboration of (currently) 12 countries on whale research in the Southern Ocean.

 

New Zealand-Australia Investment Forum

The New Zealand-Australia Investment Forum is a collaborative venture between Investment New Zealand and Austrade. The Forum is designed to maximise connections and help investors and investment-ready companies to meet the right people. Participants will hear presentations from some of the world’s most successful executives, take part in stimulating panel discussions, and attend networking events and streamed sessions. The Forum will be held over two days discussing issues facing Australasia as well as showcasing potential investment opportunities.

 

Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora: 15th Conference of the Parties

Parties to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora meet every three years to review the conventions operation, and progress the work plan mandated by previous sessions. These Conferences of Parties (COPs) provide the setting for political as well as technical discussions to advance international action addressing trade in endangered species.

New Zealand’s delegation will be led by Wilbur Dovey, who will also chair one of the two Working Committees.

 

Ninth Meeting of the Ad-Hoc Open-ended Working Group on Access and Benefit-sharing (WGABS 9)

Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) will meet with the aim of finalising negotiations on an international regime on access to genetic resources and the fair and equitable sharing of the benefits arising from the utilisation of genetic resources. If agreed the new regime could be adopted at the Tenth Conference of the Parties to the CBD to be held in Nagoya, Japan, in October (2010).

 

Conference on Asia-Pacific Regional Economic Integration and Architecture

Venue: Auckland University Business School

This conference, co-sponsored by the University of Auckland Business School, the NZ Asia Institute and the NZ Pacific Economic Cooperation Council, will aim to promote discussion on regional economic architecture issues and their importance to future regional economic development and New Zealand’s place in the region. Key note speakers include Ambassador Mohammed Noor Yacob, the new Executive Director of the APEC Secretariat based in Singapore.

 

Second ASEAN Regional Forum Inter-sessional Meeting on Maritime Security

New Zealand, in conjunction with Indonesia and Japan, is co-chairing the second ASEAN Regional Forum Inter-sessional Meeting on Maritime Security.  The meeting will focus on threats to maritime security in the broader Asia/Pacific region, identify means of enhancing regional cooperation and promote best practice, as well as identify needs for capacity building in ARF member countries.  It is expected that around 130 participants from 27 ARF countries will attend the event.
