
Whare waka at Te Raukura. WellingtonWaitangi Day 2012 marked the 172nd anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi. Diplomatic representatives from 56 countries joined thousands of New Zealanders at Waitangi Day commemorations in Wellington and Porirua. The programme succeeded in raising awareness of contemporary treaty issues; increasing connectivity with local business and, community and Maori leaders; and providing an engagement pathway for the future.
The day’s events began with a stirring Maori welcome and breakfast at Pipitea Marae and concluded with a garden party at Government House. Other highlights included a stunning waka salute and rousing haka at Te Raukura and a road-trip to Porirua to attend the popular festival of the Elements.
