
Prime Minister John Key began a four day state visit of India to strengthen the bilateral relationship and boost trade between the two countries from 26 June.
The Prime Minister was accompanied by Minister of Trade Tim Groser and a high powered business trade delegation representing the food and beverage, aviation, construction, information and communication technologies, and education sectors.
The centrepiece of the visit was meeting India’s Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, and receiving a ceremonial state welcome to India at Rashtrapati Bhavan.
The Prime Minister said the talks would be wide-ranging but are likely to focus on making further progress on the New Zealand-India Free Trade Agreement negotiations. This is one of New Zealand’s top trade negotiating priorities.
As well as laying a ceremonial wreath at Gandhi’s Memorial, the Prime Minister planned to meet with the President of the Republic of India, HE Mrs Pratibha Devisingh Patil; the Leader of the Opposition Party, Mrs Sushma Swaraj; the Vice President of the Republic of India Mr Hamid Ansari and the Chairman of the Congress Party, Mrs Sonia Gandhi.
