Honouring past and present in Gallipoli

24 April 2011

“Honouring the past with today’s photos,” was the theme of the inaugural 2011 Cannakale Photography Competition won by high school student Burcu Akcay.

Sponsored by the New Zealand Embassy in Turkey and Governorate of Cannakale, it attracted 108 photographs from 13 local high schools.

New Zealand representative, Tony Browne told the gathering of students and their families that the 26 photos exhibited were of a “very high standard”.  Both Mr. Browne and Governor Azim hoped the competition would continue and encourage students to remember the battle on the Gallipoli peninsula.

Burcu’s photo captured the military objective of the Dardanelle Straits framed through a child’s slide.  The student said she was excited to go to the Dawn Service as her mother’s grandfather had fought at Gallipoli.

The second prize winner was Gediz Edremitoglu who won an Ipad and Buse Yildirim who won an Ipod classic for third place.

Student Burcu Akcay wins a trip to the Gallipoli Dawn Service for Anzac Day and a Mac laptop with her winning photograph.
