Celebrating 35 years of ASEAN and New Zealand Relations

The ASEAN–New Zealand Commemorative Summit, the first since 1977, took place in Ha Noi on 30 October 2010.  The occasion brought together Leaders and Foreign Ministers from the 10 ASEAN countries and New Zealand to celebrate the long-standing partnership.

In his statement, Prime Minister Key noted the many achievements of the partnership and the ever-growing importance of ASEAN to New Zealand’s economic growth, culture and political focus.  A significant milestone this year has been the entry into force of the ASEAN-Australia-New Zealand Free Trade Area (AANZFTA) and the finalisation of the ASEAN-New Zealand Comprehensive Partnership.  Both will contribute to lifting the relationship to a new level.

ASEAN Leaders welcomed the commitment New Zealand had made to Asia’s development over 35 years and welcomed the announcement of four Flagship Initiatives for ASEAN in the areas of agricultural diplomacy, disaster risk management, young business leaders and academic scholarships.
