New Working Holiday Scheme comes into effect with Peru

Up to 100 New Zealanders aged between 18 and 30 will be able to visit Peru for one year to work, holiday or study under a new reciprocal working holiday scheme that takes effect on 1 August.

The Agreement was signed in Lima on 22nd November 2008 by New Zealand’s Foreign Minister Murray McCully and Peruvian Foreign Minister Jose Garcia Belaunde, in the presence of New Zealand Prime Minister John Key and Peruvian President Alan Garcia.

Peru is a focus country under the Latin America Strategy, that was designed to strengthen political, trade and economic links between New Zealand and Latin America.

Peru and New Zealand are committed to strengthening ties across the Pacific, as members of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC), which Peru hosted in 2008.

Peru has announced its intention to participate in the expanded Trans Pacific Strategic Economic Partnership Agreement (TPP) negotiations, which currently encompasses New Zealand, Chile, Singapore and Brunei.

The Working Holiday Scheme will enable young people from New Zealand and Peru to strengthen their knowledge of two open and outward looking members of the Asia Pacific region.

New Zealand has concluded a network of working holiday schemes around the world, including with five other countries in Latin America – Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Mexico and Uruguay.

Further information on the scheme and how to apply is available from the Embassy of Peru in Wellington.
