New Zealand's new Embassy building in Dili, Timor-Leste, was formally opened on 14 May.
Defence Minister Wayne Mapp represented New Zealand at the opening, along with the Timor-Leste Prime Minister Xanana Gusmao. They unveiled a plaque to mark the occasion.
The opening of the new Embassy building was a further expression of New Zealand's long-term commitment to Timor-Leste.
New Zealand has been closely involved in assisting Timor-Leste with its nation-building process since 1999. This engagement has always been well received by the Timorese, as well as by the international community.
New Zealand's decision to upgrade its diplomatic ties with Timor-Leste to ambassadorial level in October 2005 was a reconfirmation of the commitment and support for Timor-Leste's security, reconstruction and development. As a consequence of New Zealand's past and current contributions to Timor-Leste in terms of security forces and humanitarian assistance, the bilateral relationship is a very close one.
Today there are 51 diplomatic posts around the world looking after the interests of New Zealand and our citizens.
