Travelling Overseas?

Overseas travel

New Zealanders are well known for their love of international travel and adventure.  For most, travel is normally incident free – but by planning ahead and equipping yourself with the right information, you can enjoy your trip even more.

The Ministry’s 'Safe Travel' website (www.safetravel.govt.nz) has information, tips and advice for anyone planning an overseas trip.  This includes the latest travel advisories by region and country, a travel checklist, information on passports and visas, and advice about what the Ministry can help with should something go wrong.

All New Zealanders who are heading overseas for a holiday, on business or to live, are also encouraged to register their travel details on the safetravel website before heading away. The information helps us contact you in the event of an emergency overseas such as a natural disaster, or in the event of a family crisis.

Where we have needed to contact New Zealanders who are thought to be in an area affected by a major earthquake, cyclone or bomb blast overseas - those who have registered their travel contact details on the safe travel website have often been accounted for first.

Overseas travel

Where travel details are not registered, the Ministry works with its Embassies and High Commissions and contacts on the ground to try to locate New Zealanders who may be unaccounted for in a disaster area.  This can take time, especially where limited information is available about a person's travel plans and exact location, in what can be difficult conditions with limited communication avenues.  Leaving a detailed travel itinerary and contact details with family and or friends can also make a difference.

Before you depart for any overseas destination on holiday or for business, please remember to take out comprehensive travel insurance which includes medical repatriation to New Zealand.  If you have no insurance cover, repatriation will be at your own cost. In some countries medical assistance is limited and repatriation to New Zealand for urgent treatment is the only option.

For more tips and advice before you go overseas visit the Safe Travel website. For emergency consular advice, any time, call +64 4 439 8000 and ask for the Consular Officer.
