
The Third Iran-New Zealand Political and Economical Consultation Commission (PECC) was held 9 June at the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade in Wellington.
New Zealand and Iran have a well developed and longstanding bilateral relationship and maintain an open dialog.
The PECC provides a regularised opportunity for senior government officials and the business community from both countries to engage over Trade and Political issues of mutual interest and concern.
The PECC was conducted in two phases beginning with Political Consultations with Officials and moving on to Economic Consultations involving members of the New Zealand business members.
The Political Consultations were positive, with issues of mutual interest in the bilateral relationship including Education, Immigration, Cultural and Scientific Cooperation as well as a range of foreign Policy issues being discussed.
Both sides exchanged views on major regional and international issues such as developments in Iraq, Afghanistan, Palestine and Middle East, and the World Trade Organization.
Human rights, nuclear and disarmament issues were also discussed as were areas of possible cooperation in international organizations.
The Economic Consultations focused on the various bilateral trade interests of each country and discussions of wider global economic trends.
Several New Zealand firms have well developed business operations and linkage to Iran.
New Zealand firms are active in the Iranian market in areas such as diary export, CNG Technology, construction/earthquake consultancy, wool export, communications and electronics.
Discussions where also held in on establishing a consultative arrangement on investment as a sub-committee under the PECC.
The next PECC will be held in Tehran in 2009.
The officials’ consultations were led by HE Seyed Mohammad Ali Hosseini, Acting Deputy Minister for Asia- Pacific Affairs, Islamic Republic of Iran led the Iranian side and Deputy Secretary of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Michael Green led the New Zealand side.
