Ministry Statements and Speeches 2007

United Nations General Assembly 62nd Session Third Committee: Item 63(a) Advancement of Women: Joint New Zealand-Canadian explanation of vote on the adoption of resolution A/C.3/62/L.16/Rev1 on eliminating rape and other forms of sexual violence in all their manifestations, including in conflict and related situations

Canadian Delegate, 14 November 2007

Canada and New Zealand echo the important points raised by the EU in their statement. Canada and New Zealand attach great importance to the urgent need to eliminate rape and other forms of sexual violence in all their manifestations, including in conflict and related situations. Our commitment to the elimination of violence against women and girls is reflected in the numerous initiatives in which we have played an active role, including the UN Declaration on the Elimination of Violence Against Women, the Commission on Human Rights resolution on the elimination of violence against women, the Third Committee's omnibus resolution on the elimination of all forms of violence against women, and Security Council Resolution 1325 on women, peace and security. We interpret the present resolution as falling within the broader international normative framework, including the commitment of Member States to the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, the Program of Action of the International Conference on Population and Development, the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women, and the Convention on the Rights of the Child.
