UNGA 63: Third Committee: Item 62b - Racism

Explanation of vote by Amy Laurenson, NZ Representative on behalf of Norway and New Zealand, 25 Nov 2008

I have the honour to make this explanation of vote in respect of L51.rev 1 on behalf of Norway and New Zealand.

Norway and New Zealand voted in favour of the comprehensive resolution on global efforts to fight racism. Our delegations had concerns with the original draft of this resolution, several of which were accommodated in this text and several of which were not able to be addressed in the final text. However, in the interests of supporting efforts to return to a consensus resolution on combating racism, we voted in favour of this resolution on the basis that it was a compromise text. In respect of operational paragraph 36, we do not support efforts to direct subsidiary mechanism of the Human Rights Council through resolutions such as this and our support for this compromise text is without prejudice to our positions on the outcomes of the Ad Hoc Committee on Complementary Standards.
