UN Human Rights Council: Special Session on Sri Lanka

New Zealand Statement, 27 May 2009

Thank you Mr. President.

New Zealand would like to express its appreciation to the co-sponsors of this Special Session which has given the international community an opportunity to discuss the situation in Sri Lanka.

As we know, this long-running conflict has cost the lives of many Sri Lankans, has divided the nation, and has led to a humanitarian crisis, particularly for those that have been trapped in the conflict zone.

While the fighting now appears to be over, the New Zealand Government remains concerned about the plight of internally displaced persons who have fled the conflict.   We also recognise the loss of life and suffering endured by civilians in northern Sri Lanka in recent months.  We join other countries in urging the Government of Sri Lanka to allow humanitarian access to the area.

We also call on the Government of Sri Lanka to cooperate with international humanitarian agencies and non-government organisations to ensure that all those affected by the conflict receive the assistance they urgently need.

As well as addressing the immediate humanitarian needs, New Zealand also calls on the Government of Sri Lanka to establish a peace and reconciliation process which takes into account the needs and aspirations of all communities in Sri Lanka.

Thank you Mr President.
