Exporters

What we do for exporters

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade is responsible for negotiating with other governments on conditions of market access for New Zealand goods and services. We conduct the New Zealand Government's business with foreign governments and international organisations such as the World Trade Organisation (WTO).

The Ministry is the Government's principal adviser on external trade policy issues. This work relies on regular and open contact between the Ministry and New Zealand exporters.  Input from exporters helps us identify barriers to trade in specific markets and develop strategies to address them.

What's the difference between MFAT and NZTE?

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT) opens the door to foreign markets by overcoming or reducing trade access barriers.

New Zealand Trade and Enterprise (NZTE) helps New Zealand businesses get through the open door, by providing export development consultancy services. Find out more on the NZTE website [external link]

Sustainable exports

International consumers who buy New Zealand’s products are increasingly aware of the environmental impact of their lifestyles. At the same time, retailers and the food and beverage industry - particularly in the UK and Europe - are looking to provide consumers with information to differentiate certain products, brands or even retail chains, on the basis of sustainability and environmental impact. These trends appear to be emerging in other markets, including North America and parts of Asia. More
