WTO Doha Round Update – 21 July 2008

Some 34 Ministers representing 29 WTO members, including New Zealand’s Minister of Trade Phil Goff, have arrived in Geneva in recent days for the “Green Room” Ministerial meeting which is scheduled to begin Monday 21 July.

Ministers have been engaged in a series of bilateral and regional/group meetings over the weekend as preparation for this week’s negotiations. The negotiations start with a Trade Negotiations Committee (TNC) informal meeting Monday morning, to be followed by the restricted “Green Room” process that afternoon and into the evening – with this pattern repeated each day. Mr Goff will participate in both sets of meetings.

Intensive official level activity across the range of negotiating issues is also underway, with reports of some development at the officials’ working level on agriculture, NAMA, Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property issues and Services. WTO Director-General Lamy has suggested that negotiations may need to go through into the weekend, and even the week beginning 28 July should positive progress be made at Ministerial level.

Revised negotiating texts in agriculture and NAMA text may be issued at the end of the week, to reflect progress in the talks.

Copies of the latest agriculture and NAMA texts can be down loaded from the WTO website [external link]
