ASEAN, Australia and New Zealand Free Trade Agreement

Fifteenth Round Update July 2008

Held in Ha Noi, from 2-7 of June, the latest round of negotiations saw progress across all parts of the text including goods, services, investment, rules of origin, safe guards, competition policy, amongst others.

With approximately 90-95% of the text agreed, the shape of the deal has begun to emerge. There is now a real urgency amongst all parties to substantially conclude the agreement. Nevertheless, several outstanding issues remain. In particular considerable work is required to lift ASEAN ambitions in goods and sevices market access.

With the end in sight, negotiators have planned an intensive series of bilateral visits to ASEAN capitals over the coming weeks. A further negotiating round in Singapore will be held from 21-26 July. At this round negotiators will seek to advance the remaining outstanding issues.

While negotiations are now in the closing phase, we continue to welcome contact from stakeholders on this important agreement.
