The most recent round of negotiations was held in Palembang, Indonesia in late May.
Some progress was made on the framework to guide the tabling of initial offers on goods. Key outstanding issues for this framework will be a focus of the next negotiating round, assisted by the tabling of country-specific tariff request lists.
Detailed discussions on trade in services helped to clarify market access expectations, and initial offers on services commitments will be exchanged before the next round.
On investment, discussions continued on the approach to scheduling commitments. Investment offers are now under preparation.
There were credible outcomes on a range of other text areas, which could allow some of these to be agreed or very nearly agreed at the next round in Perth at the start of August. The next round should provide key milestones for ASEAN and CER trade ministers when they meet in late August in Manila.
With the request / offer stage for goods, services and investment negotiations underway, negotiators welcome any value further input from businesses on barriers to trade which they would to see addressed in these negotiations, particularly with respect of Indonesia, the Philippines and Viet Nam.
The ASEAN–Australia/New Zealand Free Trade Agreement will provide New Zealand the opportunity for greater trade and economic engagement with ASEAN and to position ourselves within the evolving regional architecture.
