The tenth round of Australia/NZ - ASEAN FTA negotiations took place in Perth in early August.
There still remains significant work to do in order to bridge difference in the core areas of goods, services and investment negotiations. At the last round negotiators focussed on a goods modality which will guide the tabling of initial offers. Proposals were exchanged and there was further convergence, but key differences remain between Australia/NZ and the ASEAN positions.
Rules of Origin negotiators continued their consideration of the rules which will determine whether goods qualify for preferential treatment under the FTA. Services and investment negotiations are in the request/offer phase. Negotiators are also working on texts in these areas in parallel. There were credible outcomes on a range of text areas with many being close to finalisation.
ASEAN and CER ministers will discuss the FTA negotiations at the AEM-CER Consultations on 26 August in Manila.
The next round of negotiations will take place from 24 - 28 September in Kuala Lumpur.
