A study into the likely benefits of a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between Korea and New Zealand is now underway.
The study was announced last December by President Roh Moo-hyun and Prime Minister Helen Clark as part of the Partnership for the 21st Century joint statement. Total trade between Korea and New Zealand was worth over $2 billion last year, and has the potential for significant growth.
The New Zealand side of the research will be conducted by the New Zealand Institute of Economic Research (NZIER) and the Centre for International Economics (CIE). The two organisations are working closely with their counterparts from the Korean Institute of International Economic Policy (KIEP), and will produce a joint report later this year. This will be presented to a roundtable of Korean and New Zealand government officials.
