About New Zealand
Climate
New Zealand has a subtropical climate. February is one of the warmest and most settled months of the year, although the weather can still be changeable. The average maximum temperature in Wellington over summer is 20°C, but temperatures can vary considerably higher and lower than that level. We recommend bringing a light-medium jacket for the evenings, or in case of a cold snap.
Currency and Credit Cards
The currency unit in New Zealand is the New Zealand Dollar. Most hotels, restaurants and shops accept internationally recognised credit cards.
Goods and Services Tax (GST)
All goods and services purchased in New Zealand are subject to a 12.5% Goods and Services Tax (GST). This is usually included in the price.
Departure Tax
An airport departure tax of up to NZ$25 (depending on airport) is payable by all passengers leaving New Zealand. (This is a separate charge not included in the price of air tickets.)
Electricity
The standard voltage in New Zealand is 230/240 volts AC (50 hertz). A standard voltage converter and plug adaptor should be sufficient for conversions. Normally, the electrical outlets in New Zealand require a flat two or three pin plug.
Language
English, Maori and New Zealand sign language are the official languages of New Zealand, with most everyday life conducted in English.
Laptops
The standard computer connection in New Zealand is the RJ45 type plug.
Smokefree
To protect people from the health effects of second-hand smoke, smoking in all internal venues, including public buildings, restaurants, bars and entertainment facilities, is prohibited in New Zealand.
Tipping
Tipping is not obligatory in New Zealand, although the practice is becoming more widespread. If you have had exceptional service, a tip of 5-10% of the bill would be appreciated.
Time Zone
New Zealand's time zone is Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) +12. In February, this will be GMT +13 due to daylight saving.
