Following Parliamentary elections held in Mongolia late-June 2008, there have been violent demonstrations in the capital Ulaanbaatar.
A State of Emergency has been imposed and a curfew is in place between 10pm to 8am and there are strict controls on alcohol, the media and traffic movement in the capital. New Zealanders in Ulaanbaatar are advised to adhere to the curfew and any restrictions imposed by the local authorities.
New Zealanders are also advised to avoid all demonstrations, rallies and large public gatherings and monitor local information sources to keep up to date with developments.
We recommend New Zealanders in Mongolia register/update their details with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
A recent strike by Telekom workers in the Solomon Islands has led to a backlog of faults affecting telecommunication services throughout the country. Now that the strike has broken, services are being restored but it may take some time to work through all the faults. A number of phone lines are still affected, including the 999 emergency number.

There has been a recent upsurge in dengue fever cases in some parts of the South Pacific (Tonga, New Caledonia, Kiribati and Palau) and in South America (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil). Dengue fever is a serious viral disease spread by the bite of infected mosquitoes. As there is no vaccine to protect against dengue fever, travellers are advised to use insect repellent, wear protective clothing, and stay in lodgings where there are mosquito screens on windows and doors. If you feel unwell during your trip or in the first two weeks after your return, you are advised to seek immediate medical advice.
Visa is the only credit card currently accepted on Niue. Holders of other credit cards should ensure they take enough cash (NZ Dollars) to cover all expenses, including hotel charges. Funds can be sent through to Western Union if extra funds are required.
Limited health care is available in Niue and travellers should ensure they have comprehensive travel insurance which includes medical repatriation to New Zealand. The New Zealand Government does not pay for medical repatriation to New Zealand which can cost around NZD80,000.
