Principal Capability Adviser to the CEO
Carolyn Schwalger was appointed as Principal Capability Adviser in June 2017.
Reporting to the Chief Executive, Carolyn is part of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade's senior leadership team.
Joining MFAT in 1996, Carolyn has held a number of roles. Her most recent role was as Ambassador/Deputy Permanent Representative at the New Zealand Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York, where she was part of the United Nations Security Council team.
Carolyn’s initial career focused on North Asia, including postings to Seoul and Tokyo.
From 2007, Carolyn moved to the Environment Division where she later became head of the Antarctica Policy Unit and divisional manager.
Educated at the University of Auckland and Yonsei University in Seoul, Korea.
Carolyn speaks Japanese and Korean.
