Pacific country candidates who make it to the final stage of the selection process must prove they can speak and write English.

As part of our selection process, we arrange English language proficiency testing for near-final candidates from the following countries:

  • Fiji
  • Kiribati
  • Papua New Guinea
  • Samoa
  • Solomon Islands
  • Tonga
  • Tuvalu
  • Vanuatu

The testing process will happen in your home country if you get to this stage of the selection process. Read Selection Process and Timeline for more information about the different stages.

All Scholarship applicants must prove how well they can speak and write English before entering a New Zealand tertiary institution.

For Pacific countries, English language testing is done at the final stage of the selection process. The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is an internationally run test that measures English-speaking ability. It uses a nine-band scale to identify levels of proficiency, from non-user (band 1) through to expert (band 9).

We use Uniservices to provide the IELTS testing services and a short preparation course. The preparatory study course is run in the evenings for 2-3 weeks before the test.

The test will probably be different to any you have taken before, so the course helps you prepare and make sure the test accurately represents your English abilities.

The 2018 IELTS testing and preparatory study courses are compulsory.

They will be held at the following times:

Application form and ID confirmation

IELTS testing requirements are strict. Applicants must complete their online application forms on time as late entries cannot be accepted and your scholarship application could be withdrawn.

Scanned passports must be clear and in colour.  If applicants are unable to scan their passport in order to submit their online application form they can ask the New Zealand High Commission in their country to scan it for them.

Online test applications

Uniservices will send test application details to you when the shortlist is confirmed.  Applications must be made online. If you are experiencing issues please contact ielts.pacific@auckland.ac.nz.

Passport

IELTS testing requires a valid passport to confirm identification. A scanned copy of your passport must be uploaded as part of your online application. Scanned passports must be clear and in colour. If you don’t have a valid passport, in some situations the IELTS Regional Australia Office may give special permission for applicants to use other acceptable identification. Email ielts.pacific@auckland.ac.nz with any queries.

Travel

For outer island applicants, the New Zealand High Commission will contact them to organise travel and accommodation. Applicants from outer islands who can’t come to the preparatory study course may be able to study online so long as they have good internet access. If this is you, email ielts.pacific@auckland.ac.nz to discuss your needs.

Disability and special learning needs

If you have a disability or special learning needs (e.g. hearing aids, a visual or learning disability) please email ielts.pacific@auckland.ac.nz as soon as possible to discuss what you need. The testing services must have at least six weeks to accommodate your needs, or three months if materials must be modified to meet your specific disability and special learning needs.
