Jonathan Curr took up his role as New Zealand’s High Commissioner to Fiji in February 2018.

Jonathan is a career diplomat. In his first 8 years in the Ministry he worked on a variety of Pacific issues, first as manager of New Zealand’s aid programme with the Cook Islands, and then as Deputy High Commissioner in Tonga. After a brief stint in the Ministry’s Environment Division, Jonathan was seconded to the Office of the Minister of Foreign Affairs (Rt Hon Winston Peters) as Private Secretary.

Following two and a half years in the Minister’s Office, Jonathan was posted to Cairo, first as a long term Arabic language student and then as Deputy Head of Mission in Egypt. He returned to the Ministry’s Middle East and Africa Division in 2013 where he served as Lead Adviser and then Unit Manager until July 2014. He was appointed Ambassador to the Republic of Turkey in 2014. While in Ankara, Jonathan was also non-resident Ambassador to Israel, Jordan, Georgia, and Azerbaijan.

Jonathan attended the University of Canterbury in New Zealand where he studied Chinese Language and Political Science, graduating with a BA in Chinese and a BA (Hons) in Political Science. He also holds an Associate’s (Teaching) Diploma in Speech & Drama from Trinity College London, and a Postgraduate Certificate in Strategic Studies from the Victoria University of Wellington.

Jonathan is joined in Suva by his wife Florence (Fololeni), who was born and raised in Tonga. Florence graduated from the University of the South Pacific before starting work with the Tongan Ministry of Finance. After migrating to New Zealand in 2005, she worked for the Capital & Coast District Health Board in Wellington in the fields of Pacific Communities and Mental Health.
