Mary Thurston

New Zealand's Ambassador to Poland, Ukraine and Latvia



Mary Thurston was appointed as New Zealand’s Ambassador to Poland, Ukraine, Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia and Georgia in July 2017. 

Mary is a career diplomat whose previous offshore postings include Singapore and Solomon Islands.  She was also Deputy Special Coordinator to the Regional Assistance Mission to Solomon Islands in 2011.  In Wellington she has worked on the Trans-Pacific Partnership free trade agreement negotiations and on bilateral relations with Vanuatu and the French Pacific Territories.

Mary also worked at New Zealand’s Ministry of Justice prior to joining the diplomatic service in 2007, following an earlier career as a secondary-school French and Spanish teacher and Head of Modern Languages Department in the United Kingdom.

Mary attended Oxford University where she studied English and French for a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) degree.  She speaks French, Spanish and Solomon Islands Pijin, and is learning Polish.
