In May 2005 the “New Zealand Alumni Network in China" was established. The Prime Minister of New Zealand, Rt Hon Helen Clark, launched the Network at a lunch held at the New Zealand Embassy in Beijing.

What is the Network?

The purpose of the New Zealand Alumni Network in China is to assist alumni who have graduated from New Zealand higher education institutions to keep in contact with their schools, with New Zealand and with each other.

The Network is not designed to be a formal “association" as such. We have no plans to set up an administrative body, and will not be maintaining a database of members at the Embassy. We also have no plans to ‘commercialise’ the Network in any way.

Many New Zealand higher education institutions now keep in touch with their own Chinese alumni. The alumni offices in these institutions will continue to keep in touch with their own alumni, to arrange events and pass on information about the institution. The NZ Alumni Network in China will make use of these existing arrangements - from time to time we will send information and invitations through the same channels, to connect all alumni together at a ‘national’ level.

The Network will provide you with the latest information and updates on New Zealand, and the New Zealand-China relationship. From time to time we will arrange networking events for alumni in Beijing and Shanghai, and we hope in other Chinese cities. We will also work to arrange opportunities for alumni to meet visiting New Zealand government and private sector leaders when they are in China.

How to keep in contact?

The New Zealand Educated website (external link) contains a contact homepage for NZ alumni in China (Chinese language only). This will include updates on developments in New Zealand and information on upcoming events for or of interest to alumni.

In addition, participating New Zealand higher education institutions will pass on regular Alumni Network newsletters and invitations to their alumni in China. We encourage all alumni to contact their institutions, to check that they are on email or postal distribution lists for this information - your university or polytechnic would be very pleased to hear from you. Contact lists for the institutions so far participating in the NZ Alumni Network in China are:

If your institution is not on the list, please email the education section at An.Jiangqun@educationnz.govt.nz and we will encourage your institution to join the initiative in future.

It is your Network!

We would be very pleased to receive alumni’s ideas and suggestions for how to make the Network more effective, useful and relevant. We know that you will only support the Network if it meets your needs. We would welcome contact with alumni at any time – please email the education section on An.Jiangqun@educationnz.govt.nz if you have ideas you would like to share with us.

Thank you for your support for and interest in the NZ Alumni Network in China. We look forward to keeping in touch with you.
