High Commissioner to India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Ambassador to Nepal
Joanna Kempkers took up the role of High Commissioner to India in January 2017. Joanna is concurrently High Commissioner to Bangladesh and Sri Lanka and Ambassador to Nepal.
Joanna is a career diplomat. She has had postings in France, Fiji and the Cook Islands. Earlier in her career she worked on New Zealand’s Closer Economic Relations with Australia before focusing on New Zealand’s political, trade and development relationships in the Pacific. Her most recent role in New Zealand was as Chief of Protocol at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
Originally from Christchurch, Joanna is a graduate from the University of Canterbury with a Bachelor of Arts in Economics and Honours in French.
Joanna is married to Dr Tim Markwell. They have three children.
