47th session of the Human Rights Council Adoption of the Universal Periodic Review of Nauru

Ministry Statements & Speeches:

Delivered by Lucy Duncan, New Zealand Permanent Representative, 8 July 2021.

Madam President

New Zealand warmly welcomes the opportunity to comment on the adoption of the Universal Periodic Review of the Republic of Nauru.

We strongly support Nauru’s ongoing commitment to human rights and its efforts since the 2015 UPR review to actively address human rights challenges.

New Zealand commends Nauru for establishing a working group to consider ratifying key international human rights treaties, including the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.

We also commend Nauru for its strong commitment to women’s rights and the priority placed on addressing domestic violence. We welcome the establishment of a Department of Women’s Affairs and Social Development to further contribute to these priorities. Addressing gender-based violence is essential to ensuring women are able to achieve their full economic, social, and political potential.

We encourage Nauru to also consider reviewing the high visa fees for foreign media as recommended during its UPR review, in order to support media access and freedoms.

Finally, we acknowledge the threats of climate change and food insecurity to the ability of the people of Nauru to fully realise and enjoy their rights. We remain committed to supporting Nauru to address the impact of these threats.

Thank you Madam President.
