New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has a message for Kiwis living in Australia after New Zealand workers in Australia became eligible for the JobKeeper payment.

Kia ora everyone,

To all the Kiwis living in Australia. I know that no matter where you are in the world, everyone is doing it tough as the globe takes on COVID-19 and that includes all of you living in Australia.

We've been aware of your plight for some time and so myself and our Minister of Foreign Affairs Winston Peters have both been advocating strongly for New Zealanders living in Australia. Just yesterday morning I was speking with Prime Minister Scott Morrison around the need for Kiwis to be able to access any form of support payment during COVID-19. That's why we were so pleased yesterday night to hear news that New Zealanders would be eligible for the wage subsidy scheme that has been established by the Australian Government.

The JobKeeper scheme is a 1,500 dollar payment fortnightly available to those who are employed in full-time work, part-time work or long term casuals. So for anyone who has been in work from and was in work on the 1st of March, if your employer is eligible then you as a Kiwi working in that firm will be too. It covers those on the New Zealand Special Catergory Visa, or otherwise known as 444s. And, this is a group that we're very keen to make sure are being looked after during this period of time of COVID-19.

So, if you would like to see more details please take a look at the Australian Treasury website, details are posted here on the High Commission webpage and Facebook page. Otherwise, till then make sure you are looking after yourselves. We here in New Zealand are thinking of all of you in Australia too. Ka kite.

Note: the vast majority of New Zealanders in Australia are on 444 visas.
