If the length of the course you are planning to study is designed to last for longer than 3 months, you must apply for a student visa, regardless of how long you plan to study in New Zealand.

Visa waiver agreement for French passport holders

Under the visa waiver agreement, French passport holders are able to undertake one course of study in New Zealand without a visa for up to three months, provided they have return air tickets, a valid passport and proof of sufficient funds. To study in New Zealand for a period longer than three months, you will need to obtain a student visa.
