Supporting New Zealand’s transition

We work with other government agencies to support New Zealand’s action to reduce our own greenhouse gas emissions and meet our international obligations.

This inter-agency work is led by the Ministry for the Environment(external link), and framed by the Climate Change Response (Zero Carbon) Amendment Act and the Zero Carbon Framework.

The work to enable a just transition to a low-emissions and climate-resilient future is a priority for the government and for New Zealanders. It includes a focus on ensuring the effects of climate change and our response to it do not disproportionally impact Māori, to meet our obligations under Te Tiriti o Waitangi.

The Ministry also works to ensure the inclusion of indigenous voices in our international engagement, across climate, foreign policy and trade matters – see also Influencing global action.
