Minister of Foreign Affairs Winston Peters spoke on 22 April with Japan’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Toshimitsu Motegi to exchange views on the current COVID-19 emergency and more broadly developments in the Asia-Pacific region.
The two Ministers welcomed New Zealand and Japan’s cooperation on the issue of transits, so as to make it easier for their citizens stranded offshore to get home, and discussed their governments’ respective policies to encourage social distancing and stop the spread of COVID-19.
Minister Peters underlined New Zealand’s ongoing support for Japan’s hosting of the Olympic Games, to be held in 2021.
The Ministers also discussed the importance of the Pacific Islands region being supported as it faces the challenge of tackling COVID-19. They pledged ongoing cooperation between New Zealand and Japan in the Pacific.
